Porto Koufo is the largest and safest natural harbor in Greece. The name «Kofos port» is mentioned by Thucydides. The dimensions are: maximum length 1,600 m, maximum width 550 m, maximum depth of 8-23 m, 300 m opening entry, depth entry 5,5-27 and 10-33 m in rocky and steep coast open caves, one of which, in NA. side of the entrance, visitors can go by boat. Another interesting cave is located in SE. side of the harbor, on top of the intersection of the old quarry.
Its visit is almost impossible now, because of the incision made in the Quarrying. The cave must have been a place of worship in Roman times. Later, to purified space, Christians distinctive red crosses painted on the roof of the cave.
In Porto Koufo there are German fortifications that are in the characteristic height, left while we are getting with the ship. The remains of fortifications built by the Germans during the Second World War are saved and underground rooms and decks, on which were rigged to epaktia firearms as well. The visit can only be done on foot, by walking half an hour from the Castle of Likithou. Those who love hiking can try the laborious ascent of the fortifications of the Acropolis of Toroni (45 minutes approximately).
